In Germany, seven out of every 100 babies are born prematurely. And this number is rising because the risk factors are increasing: more and more women are making the decision to have children later in life, and the number of in vitro fertilizations is increasing. This not only results in a greater frequency of multiple births, coming into the world earlier than planned; in vitro fertilization also doubles the risk of miscarriage and premature birth. Following stories of extremely premature births from Germany, France and Japan, this 3sat science documentary examines international medicine and the accompanying ethical discussions.
