Sri Lanka On Buddha's Footsteps through Paradise

Documentary // ZDF / ARTE 2001, 2 x 45 Min., Betacam SP

"The Pearl of the Indian Ocean"; that is what the Portuguese seafarers called the small island near the South tip of the Indian sub-continent. There is something in that: Sri Lanka entices the traveller with its picture book beaches, tropical rain forests, bizarre mountain ranges and a lively, Buddhist-influenced culture.

The film follows Buddha's footsteps to the millennia-old king cities, to Buddhist monks at the temple of Kandy, to the tea fields in the highlands, to the holy mountain "Adam's Peak" and to the palm leaf library where Buddha's doctrines are written down in the traditional way. We also accompany an elephant keeper to his work and learn something about Ayurveda.
