Indian Weddings A Big Fat Business

Documentary // ZDF / ARTE 2011, 45 mins, HD

In India's largest cities, a bizarre new profession has established itself: the wedding detective. His job is to dig up information on the financial situation of the bride and groom, on their character and level of education. Parents spare no expense before agreeing to their children's marriages: now that matches are no longer based on personal feelings but are increasingly made through the internet, parents want to be sure of what they're getting before they accept a new member into the family.

The film documents the complex system of betrothal and marriage in India, and presents the big business that is the wedding market in the city of New Delhi. In the process it reveals a society that is searching for a compromise among old marriage traditions, the caste system and the modern influence of the West – and in doing so, sometimes defeats itself.
